New Moon Report
Eighth Biblical Month
The observers from Israel have reported that they were unable to sight the moon on October 16, 2012. This was one of those extreme borderline sightings, which might not have visible under perfect weather conditions. There was 1.89% illumination but only 36 minutes lagtime. If the moon had been visible it would have set a record from Israel. Pending further reports, new moon will be tomorrow night (October 17) by default (a lunar month can only be 29 or 30 days).

Leviticus 23:10-16 “10 Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl (Israel), and you shall say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first-fruits of your harvest to the priest. 11 And he shall wave the sheaf before יהוה (Yahweh), for your acceptance. On the morrow after the Sabbath (NOTE: This is speaking of the weekly Sabbath and not the first day of Unleavened Bread which is also known as a High Sabbath.) the priest waves it. 12 And on that day when you wave the sheaf, you shall prepare a male lamb a year old, a perfect one, as a burnt offering to יהוה (Yahweh), 13 and its grain offering: two-tenths of an ĕphah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to יהוה (Yahweh), a sweet fragrance, and its drink offering: one-fourth of a hin of wine. 14 And you do not eat bread or roasted grain or fresh grain until the same day that you have brought an offering to your Elohim (Mighty One/God) – a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 15 And from the morrow after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, you shall count for yourselves: seven completed Sabbaths. 16 Until the morrow after the seventh Sabbath you count fifty days, then you shall bring a new grain offering to יהוה (Yahweh).”
Following the basic instructions about Pentecost’s location on the calendar in Leviticus 23:10-16, we find that when Israel came into Canaan, they were to count beginning with the day following a Sabbath. Without further instruction, there could be a whole year’s worth of Sabbaths to choose from! However, within Leviticus 23, the annual Sabbaths are arranged chronologically beginning with Nisan (also called Abib). This, combined with information obtained from other portions of the Bible, has led all concerned to conclude that the Sabbath in question is early in the year, located near the beginning of a spring harvest, and is one of three within the Days of Unleavened Bread. The church of God and the various sects of the Jews are in agreement on this.
The count is to continue fifty days with the fiftieth day being the Day of Pentecost. As a Greek word, the name Pentecost does not appear in the Old Testament, only in the New, and it means “fiftieth.” In the Old Testament, Pentecost is called “the Feast of Weeks” or “the Feast of Firstfruits.”
Carefully note that God points only to a Sabbath–it must first be found–in order to begin the count. This fits nicely within God’s directive in Exodus 31:13 that the Sabbath is a sign between Him and His people. Day One of the count does not begin with a Sabbath, but with the day following it. However, without first isolating which Sabbath, one cannot know which “morrow”–which day after. If one does not use the correct Sabbath, it may set Pentecost’s observance as much as seven days off God’s intended target.
The Sabbath in question here can be neither the First nor the Last Day of Unleavened Bread, though both are annual Sabbaths. Why? Because using either of those holy days, both of which fall on fixed dates, effectively eliminates a person’s need to count! This is because, when one begins counting fifty days from a fixed date, one will always end on a fixed date.
If we begin to count with the day following Nisan 15 (the First Day of Unleavened Bread), we will always end on Sivan 6. If we commence our count on the day following Nisan 21 (the Last Day of Unleavened Bread), we will always finish on Sivan 12. If God wanted us to observe Pentecost on a fixed date, He would have told us so, even as He did with all the other festival dates in Leviticus 23.
One man suggested that counting from a fixed date is still counting. Yes, that is true. But if one does that, the count only has to be done once in all of history, and Pentecost’s location is found forever. The man’s suggestion is similar to interpreting that the command to eat unleavened bread during the Days of Unleavened Bread no longer applies because the Israelites did it when they first came out of Egypt! Even as unleavened bread must be eaten each year, the clear implication from Leviticus 23 is that God wants us to count to Pentecost afresh each year.
God wants us to count to Pentecost year-by-year beginning with the day following a Sabbath whose date changes from year to year. This can only be the weekly Sabbath that falls on or between the two holy days during the Days of Unleavened Bread. The starting point has been located. Even though the count does not actually begin with the Sabbath, the Sabbath’s location is of primary importance, not the day after. The day after would never be located without first locating the correct Sabbath.
I have decided to conclude this teaching series on ‘numbers’ with the number thirty seven. It has been my privilege during this particular series to receive a lot of information and help from my good friend, Rosemary Brown. Rosemary has poured more hours of her life into research in gematria and related subjects in the last year that I have known her, than most people could accomplish in a lifetime. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Rosemary and her exhaustive work.
It is Rosemary who made me aware of the frequently appearing number ’37’ in scripture. I pray that if nothing else, this teaching has made every reader more sensitive to our Creator’s use of numbers. We now know, since the advent of computers, that all things can be reduced to or represented by numbers. Even computers use binary code to produce what you are seeing on your screen right now. At this time I am not completely certain as to the teaching representation of the number thirty seven. It simply appears in many familiar Hebrew words and phrases. One of my favorites is the amount of times that the Hebrew words for ‘circumcision’ and ‘uncircumcision’ appear in the Tenakh (Old Covenant/Testament). YHVH (Yahweh) made a covenant with our father Avraham in B’reshith (Genesis) 17 involving circumcision. Those who were circumcised became part of the covenant and those who refused were cut off from the covenant. This is analogous to receiving the word of God or refusing the word of God. The Hebrew words these two English words come from (mul, ‘arel) appear thirty seven times in the Tenakh. The phrase ‘Bethlehem of Judah’ where Yeshua‘ was born appears thirty seven times in the scriptures. The golden lampstands in the Tabernacle appear thirty seven times in scripture as well.
The gematria of a good many words we are all familiar with also add up to thirty seven or multiples of thirty seven. Some of these in English are peace (shalom), redeem (ga’al), signs (‘ot), witness (‘ed), testimony (‘ed), rock, (tzor)teaching (lamad), foundation (yesod), standard or tribal camp location (degel).
Five centuries before the first coming of Messiah, a Greek philosopher named Pythagoras wrote the following words, “… numbers are the language of the universe”. Modern science has now caught up with that provocative statement. In this short series on the subject, I have not begun to even scratch the surface of the enormity of the truths contained in YHVH’s use of numbers throughout scripture. The fingerprints of the God of Israel are found in every letter and between every letter. His desparate desire to reach out to mankind in every way He can is abundantly evident. All creation points to the Word of God and survives by His Torah. My favorite section of scripture has always been the 119th Psalm. This Psalm is broken up into exactly 22 sections of 8 verses each. The entire theme of this Psalm is the laws and commandments of God and their blessing in your life. There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. The first 8 verses all begin with the first letter of the alphbet. The next 8 begin with the second letter and so on until the last letter. The gematria of Yehu’ is 22. This word means ‘YHVH is HE’. The numerical value of ‘ahav or love is 8. It is the Messiah who said “If you LOVE me you will keep my COMMANDMENTS.” In 22 sections of 8 verses each the God of Israel spoke to all of mankind what Yochanan (John) 3:16 says, I LOVE YOU!
